Contech SquirrelStop Automatic Spinning Squirrel Deterrent Review

Second SquirrelStop purchased through Amazon. Depending on the construction of the feeder, I have finished the battle of wits with these 'rodents'. 90% of the time this product will deliver its objective. That is to toss the furry into space. "They" did tend to cling to the feeder constructed of softer material such as wood. Maybe they could develop a model with a supercharge takeoff that kicks in when this is detected.

This feeder is attractive and made mostly of a nice coppery metal. I bought it as a finch feeder for thistle seed. Unfortunately, the feeder ports are made of cheap plastic, are hard to work with, and come off and break easily. I will probably have to contact the company for replacements. Something else that is important to note is that it is very top heavy. When filling with bird seed it will be awkward to handle for people who are older, have arthritis, carpal tunnel (as I do), or any other difficulty with their hands.

I bought this bird feeder after looking locally for a large feeder - prices were out of sight here.This is a strong & heavy feeder.It may not hang on your average hook or limb.It's made for almost any feed except thistle. Ours is loaded with half chicken scratch and half bird seed mix from our local feed store.It easily comes apart and goes back together for refill or cleaning.

While still being a nice large feeder I found out that rain will fill the bird seed tray and soak up into the entire container of feed where it sours or ferments. The base needs to be worked over. I have a good metal and woodworking shop. I imagine I'll remove what base I can and still retain the feeder holes and assembly full length screw and attach a flat wooden and/or screen wire platform. Well, it seemed to work for a few months. Then the plastic inserts began to fall out and the seed won't stay in. I cut some plastic replacements from a milk jug and these worked for a month or so, but more of the originals keep falling out. Three are gone, and the feeder is not a year old yet. My feeder hangs under the house overhang and so is not rained on; no problems with the spring, though the "stop" that keeps the cage from going too far down fell out fairly soon (I just put a piece of wire in its place).Grackle can feed at this feeder well.Larger birds such as blue jays and a large woodpecker will occasionally hang onto it in some way, but they don't persist. Purple finch and gold finch like it; I get some cardinals even (with black oil sunflower).

Perky Pet 209 "Our Best" Hummingbird Feeder, 30 oz capacity Review

I'm still hunting for the perfect feeder.This feeder meets most of my requirements:
1. Reservoir must be glass, not plastic.Plastic reservoirs get cloudy, always look dirty and seem to breed mold and mildew.Glass is easier to clean - just wash with soapy water.Every couple of times I wash it, I add a couple of drops of bleach to the soapy water.Rinse thoroughly with hot water.I've never had a problem with mold buildup in the corners.
2. Must have a perch for the hummers -they prefer it that way.
3. Must have a decent size reservoir to eliminate the need to fill twice daily.When hummers are not quite as active don't fill this one up all the way.Sometimes it should just be filled 1/4 of the way.Ideally this feeder would have a bottle that is slightly smaller.Perhaps a 24 ounce size bottle that is a bit narrower might be better.But then it might heat up more in the sun and begin the habit of growing mold and mildew.This bottle is highly resistant to mold and mildew if cleaned at least once a week.
4.Must be an inverter type to easily see the food level and to hold an adequate amount of food without the need to refill more than every two or three days.
5.Base must be easy to clean without crevices that you can't get to.This is the area where this feeder fails horribly.You cannot disassemble the base and all you can do is wash and rinse.
6.Design of the feeder should not allow Yellow jackets access to the food.Although they may smell it and try to get to it, they can't with this feeder - they quickly give up and leave the food for the hummers.The liquid level in the base is too far from the feeding ports for the yellow jackets to reach.The other Perky Pet feeder that I have (the 24 oz with the hourglass shape) is too shallow and the yellow jackets take over the feeder in the late summer months.This feeder is a much better design.
7.The plastic base should be of a high quality non-porous plastic.This feeder meets this requirement.
8.The ports should not be some silly design to look like a flower.This one barely meets this requirement.At least the plastic flowers are flush with the base instead of sticking up like some of the really cheap feeders.
9.Ideally the glass bottle should be easily replaceable.This feeder does not meet this requirement.What I would really like to see is a design where you can use a standard mason jar and the feeder would have some type of easily cleanable adapter.Or how about using a standard 1 quart vinegar bottle?I saw one like this once, but wasn't sure if the feeder met my yellow jacket requirements.

Duncraft 18834 Selective Squirrel Block Feeder Review

I've been through a few feeders looking for something simple that beats the squirrels. This one fits the bill. Its all metal construction prevents chewing, and the distance between the inner wire mesh feed tube and outer cage is sized to allow the birds to reach the seeds with ease. The squirrels can't get at them. It has attracted woodpeckers, nuthatches, titmice and cardinals (which eat seeds that spill on the ground below it). It has a simple locking tab on top that seals the lid but allows for easy refilling.
I just wish it was made in the USA instead of China, like so many other things. I'd happily pay more for that.

Avant Garden 8102-2 English Garden Bird Feeder Review

This is a great looking bird feeder.It attracts a variety of small and large birds, and holds enough food for about a week in my yard.

I made the mistake of thinking the bars would make it squirrel proof, but it isn't in the least. In fact, they have figured out how to jump to the feeder and wedge their entire bodies inside the bars! Impressively acrobatic, but very annoying. I finally moved the bird feeder to another spot because they were bending the bars and it was just a matter of time before they completely destroyed it.

So, I definitely recommend this bird feeder, but make sure you put it in a place where the squirrels can't reach it, or they will break it for sure.

Droll Yankees YF Flipper Bird Feeder Review

I have been battling the squirrels with limited success for years. Either the feeders didn't stop the squirrels at all or they were so dang ugly I didn't want them in my yard. The squirrels even ate a few of the "squirrel proof" feeder I tried.
I'm pretty cheap, but the Droll Yankee Co. seems to have a good reputation so I wasn't too reluctant to part with the bucks for this feeder. My first impression was that it is a lot larger than I expected and seemed to be sturdier than most feeders.
I plugged it in and let it charge overnight (it charges like a power screwdriver), filled it with black-oil sunflower and hung it in my favorite bird feeder tree the next morning. My Carolina-chickadees and Cardinals were feeding within thirty minutes, Mr.Squirrel made his first attempt after about an hour. There is really no way I can describe what followed. Let's just say I have some really freaked out squirrels around my house.
I have had the feeder up for over a month, the squirrels have been forced to feed from the spilled seed on the ground and the feeder is still operating from the original charge.
This feeder is is worth every penny and then some. I wish I could give it more than five stars.

I have had this bird feeder for about a year now and we really like it except that it is a bigger seed waster than our other nijer seed finch feeders.You definately need the Bird Quest large size seed tray to catch all the seed that falls through the holes.The holes on this feeder are round, not oblong like on most finch feeders.It is fun to watch the birds flock to this feeder.They do come to this feeder first, before our other feeders.I wonder if it is because the seed comes out of this one easier.

Avant Garden 8302-4 Berkshire Lodge Feeder Review

It is strange that the feeder instructions urges one to use Cardinal food--sunflower seeds--when I don't believe it is large enough for a Cardinal to land on. "My" Cardinalshave eaten the spillings from Chickadees but haven't ventured to try to land on such a tiny ledge. It is easy to fill and looks good. Our local squirrel has leaped upon it but slid off as it is apparently too small for it too. Even the Chickadees can barely keep their balance.; they pluck the seeds and then eat them off the ground.

Avant Garden 8110-3 Looking Glass Hummingbird Feeder Review

I am ordering my second feeder today. I've been using the same one for 3 years now year round, because we have hummers all year long in Phoenix. It is still in perfect condition. I like this one because the parts are mostly metal, and the sun is brutal here on anything plastic. The only problem I've had with it is aligning the bottom correctly so the nectar doesn't leak out. I've mastered it now, so it's not a problem. To avoid breaking the neck off of the jar, I soak the unit in warm water for a few minutes before unscrewing. I'm also very careful not to over tighten. I fill it only half way, as the birds don't like the food if it's over a few days old, especially in warm weather. Here is a trick for cleaning your feeder. Put about 3 Tbls. of white vinegar mixed with two cups of water in the feeder. Add about 1/2 cup of white uncooked rice. (I use a funnel) and shake. The friction from the rice will clean even the dark mold off of the inside. Rinse well before filling.

Heritage Farms Absolute II Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder Review

We are looking for another feeder, so when I got to this page I thought I would tell you why this is the one we're going to purchase.

We got our first `7536' feederover 10 years and we still like it.For one thing it holds an entire grocery store size bag of sunflower seeds and for anotherthe birds love it.Frequently both sides are filled with our feathered friends while there are others waiting in the tree for their turn.[Thus our interest in another feeder.]

Presently we have Chickadees, Nuthatches, Cardinals, House sparrows, Wrens, Gold finches, the occasional flicker and small woodpecker visiting.When we lived it Texas it was convenient to exclude those pesky, though attractive, jays.

Initially I think (okay--my memories a little faded after a decade!) it did keep the squirrels at bay, but that hasn't been the case for many years.In fact, our local `free-range' squirrel has the glossiest coat you can imagine.But we don't really care as he is so jealous of the feeder that he keeps other intruders away.

The lapse in squirrel-proof-ness is probably due to years of collected grime and dust that clog the springs.That and just the passage of time.

Four Stars.Our feeder is doing just fine after 10 years.I think the other reviewer is wrong in saying that this feeder is available for less money.I think what he has seen is the one sided version of this same feeder.I say this because we have searched around a bit in order to save money.

And about the squirrels--we saw a PBS special one time that showed what a gray squirrel would actually do for lunch. They had these squirrels climbing, jumping, and riding in little wagons through a long tube to get to a bird feeder.I concluded after watching those experiments that `proofing' was a ridiculous notion.LOL.

This product is the ONLY thing to use for thistle seeds. You will get some bright yellow goldfinches, who are the "only" bird that can hang upside downto eat the seeds. Any other feeder will attract sparrows. Sparrows land on the posts on this one and try really hard to reach under, but always fall off the perch. The gold finches just spin around upside down and go to town eating. It does make a bit of a mess under it, with thistle seed tailings, so be careful on placement (i.e. in a garden not on your patio, or have some kind of tray underneath).

This is one of 7 feeders that I have at my home NOTHING relaxes me and perks me up more than seeing all the colorful birds around my home. When I saw this one at it's incredible price, I had to give it a shot. It mounted to the window in about 30 seconds-I filled it with finch food, and had a purple finch perched and eating an hour later! What a thrill to be cleaning house, at the computer or relaxing in my recliner, and to be able to look out of our big, bay window and see the goldfinches and other birds perched. Brome 1055 Squirrel Buster Mini Review

I purchased this product because the squirles were eating all my bird seed. I was happy with the product and it was easy to assemble, fill and hang. My only complaint is that in order for it to be 100% squirel proof it needs to be hung at least 18 inches from the nearest post. My hanger only has about 12 inches of clearance, so it's not 100% squirrel proof in my situation, but it still cuts down on the amount they can reach, and my seed that used to be gone in 2 days has lasted over 2 weeks now. It would have been helpful to have that stipulation on the outside of the box instead of only on the insert inside the bos, or else I would have taken that into consideration in my purchase. On the whole I am happy with the purchase.

This birdfeeder has enough going against it that I wouldn't purchase it if given another chance.The central wire makes it swing much more in the wind, making it difficult for birds to feed on a windy day.Although the cover has a button to hold the lid in place, on windy days, the button doesn't hold well and the bird food dumps all over the ground.Also, the plastic windows aren't big enough and are barely held in place by the 2 metal clips that line the side of each edge.The plastic fell out when the wind blew my feeder off a really secure branch.However, at least it didn't break.So, overall, I'm not happy with this feeder and wouldn't recommend it to others.

My husband had this on his wish list and based on the other reviews I almost didn't order it for him. Others said birds couldn't get seeds out and didn't use the feeder. We have lots of birds using this feeder at all times and I once counted 10 birds on it at the same time. Some cling to the wires and others sit on the perch to eat. The top has kept the snow and rain off of it and it holds a ton of seeds at one time (not filling it as much). Also the squirels have yet to destroy it unlike many other feeders we have had. Hi folks. I don't have spare time to review every product I buy here with over 250 orders in the last year. However, I do feel obligated to mention or warn others when a product fails under normal ordinary conditions.

This bird feeder looks very nice, it holds plenty of bird seed, and I have no problems with the funky lid or filling the feeder. (I don't like the flimsy plastic glass)

I wondered "WHY are the birds completely ignoring this feeder when I clearly see it's still half full of seed? They used to like it. What's the deal?" Hummm.

I quickly discovered the problem. What happens is; every time it rains, the bottom area (tray) gets filled with water and saturates the seed, turning it into a thick muddy paste. At this point, the birds have no interest. After examining the feeder, I noticed the "tray" has little tiny drain holes - not quite the size of lead in a pencil. These drain holes are obviously insufficient. I doubt I can drill the plastic holes larger without breaking the tray.

In summary, I find it surprising that no other reviewers mentioned this problem. Ultimately, my recommendation is to only buy this feeder if you hang it in a dry area, such as in a pavilion, under an eave, or a similar location. For me, it's time to go bird feeder shopping once more.

This feeder is the best I've had, and I have had a bunch. It has a huge capacity so you don't have to fill it very often. It is almost impossible for squirrels to stand on and if they manage to get a foothold their weight closes the feeding ports so they can't get anything. You can adjust it to exclude large birds such as starlings and grackles. When it needs to be cleaned you just put it in the dishwasher. When an especially crafty squirrel tried to chew it's way in to my feeder I informed Brome about the damage and they sent me a replacement part for free! Brome 1015 Squirrel Buster Classic Review

No, maybe squirrels can't get inside the feeder, but they don't have to. All they have to do is shake it or set it to swinging, and seed goes all over the place. Then they take what seeds they want out of the resulting mess and leave the rest to rot. They can trash a feeder's worth of seed within a week. I'll be looking for yet another feeder as soon as I can afford it.
