The majority of bird houses are the closed type since that is what most birds desire. So we are talking about 4 walls, a floor and a pitched roof to let rain drip off. The roof must overhang the walls so that the water doesn't back up into the bird house. In fact, it is a good idea to drill ventilation holes under the eaves. A bird house without ventilation is just an oven in the summer. Also, their must be a drain hole or small drain holes in the floor to let water and waste escape.
