Duncraft 18814 Accent Feeder Review

This is the best squirrel proof type of bird feeder there is - as far as I have been able to determine in several decades of trying to find such an article.I have owned many other types, including the Hertitage green metal monster weighted-perch feeders.I don't know how stupid your squirrels are, but here they just hang by one foot from the hanger or the perch jointof the Heritage feeders and stick their heads into the slot, holding the feeder open with their fat necks while they gorge themselves.Poles don't stop them.Greased poles don't stop them.Silicone spray and WD-40 don't stop them.They just keep working at it until they wear the stuff out.

This style of feeder, where the feeder itself is inside a substantial baffle, is the closest thing to squirrel proof I have found.I own several in different sizes.To successfully deter squirrels, look for these features:The baffle should be far enough from the tube or feeder that a squirrel absolutely cannot reach the feeder within.Ideally there should NOT be a tray on the bottom of the feeder.Spilled seed should be able to fall through to the ground for the ground feeding birds.If there is a tray, squirrels will just keep coming back for the seed they can reach near the edge, and so they will hang on the feeders preventing birds from coming.

Lately my squirrels have figured out how to chew the top of the plastic feed tube that extends above the baffle, just under the metal cap, until they open up the entire top of the feeder.If the manufacturers would fit a metal ring around the top of the feed tube, they could make this feeder even more squirrel-"proof".

Anyone who succeeds in devising a truly squirrel proof platform or perch type feeder should be awarded some kind of Nobel Prize!

Window Hummingbird Feeder, HUMMINGBRD WINDOW FEEDER Review

I ordered two of these for myself and then two for my mother because they are just too much fun to have and to watch the hummingbirds come and feed from.I especially like the fact that the hummingbirds like to check you out as you are checking them out.I was pleasantly surprised that it took only 2-3 days for them to find it, although I have a large group of birds already in my yard.I was slightly worried that they would be reluctant to feed at the sliding glass window of my house with my movements going on, as well as my English Mastiff and my 2 cats, but they seem not to mind the noise or the movement beyond the window at all.It's as if they understand they are safe from the cats on the other side of the glass Ha Ha Ha.The feeders open up easily which means easy cleanings and easy refillings, and it's nice to be able to see clearly when the food level is getting low. The only main drawback that I've found so far is that it has been a breeding site for a bug (which I haven't quite decided that it's a mosquito for sure).I guess this could also be a plus though because hummingbirds eat bugs just as often and possibly more so than they do nectar, so this may be good for them to find both foodstuffs in the same spot.I'm also not sure about bees in the summertime, but we'll have to wait until then to find out about whether that's a problem or not.

Gardner Equipment Thistle Sak Finch Feeder Review

I've had this sock for about six months now. The birds seem to have a very difficult time getting seeds out of it.(I'm using thistle seeds.) If I shake the sock soundly, I can feel some seeds creeping out of the tiny holes. And, the birds will come by and take those seeds.But, they don't work at getting the seeds, and it's rare that it attracts any birds. There are MANY birds in my rural yard, including lots of finches. But, they don't use this feeder. I had much better luck with the pre-filled thistle socks I used to purchase.

Seattle Rain Guard, 10" Clear Review

This is a wonderful product. If you have a yankee feeder and you want to protect your bird seed from the rain this is the product to get. The birds like it, it keeps the seeds fairly protected (not counting rain conditions like rain coming from the side and not straight down) and it fits snugly on the feeder. It's very easy to move up and down to where you need it. Only designed for Yankee feeders.

Also tip: It's easier to put on when your feeder is empty. The design of my feeder you have to put it on from the bottom, not the top. All yankee feeders may be designed like that or it could just be mine but check which way is easiest to put on before filling up.

Also I brought the Droll Omni Seed tray that is meant for yankee feeders and it's great to. I have both the Omni Tray and the rain guard on my feeder and the birds love both and it saves seeds and I'm all about saving money! Less seeds wasted...less money spent.

Vari-Crafts Recycled Plastic Suet Feeder, 2 Cake Review

I bought two of these to add to the bird feeding station in my yard.They are well constructed and very attractive and I like that they are made in the USA from recycled materials.Unfortunately, they don't seem to be practical or useful for their intended purpose.Bigger birds (like woodpeckers & grackles) definitely can't get a perch on them and even the little chickadees & nuthatches seem to be struggling to feed from them.I will probably go back to feeding suet from the cheap little green cages you can purchase in any department store and these Vari-Craft feeders will be a just an expensive decoration.

ETA, After several days, the birds seem to have adapted.I haven't seen the large woodpecker come back to my yard to use this, but the smaller woodpeckers and the chickadees are able to get to the suet after all.That is, when there is any suet left after the grackles have pigged out.I may look at one of the upside down feeders next to try to discourage some of the grackles.

I have owned these "made in the U.S.A" bird feeders [SELECT-A-FEEDER] for years.I have thrown away other plastic bird feeders and repaired good wooden bird feeders, but nothing has been needed except filling and cleaning these feeders. Not one of these feeders has been replaced yet!

This feeder is far more rain and wind resistant than reasonably expected. The five pound hopper means fewer trips to fill the feeder (Great on those cold days). Songbird Cedar Ultimate Bluebird House Review

I have had bluebirds nesting in my back yard for about five years (after trapping the English sparrows that always drove them away). I had a pine bluebird box but it required various modifications: a copper hole guard to keep enemy birds from enlarging the entrance, a bird ladder to help fledglings get out (or, if used by bone-tired migrating tree swallows, the parent birds), and frequent treatment and repair as it weathered. My old birdhouse, despite improvements, eventually needed replacement, and I stepped up to this model Songbird Cedar Ultimate Bluebird House. I have been delighted with it. It is made of weather-resistant cedar, which will not darken to the point that it becomes a heat trap. The ventilating slots under the roof are large but sheltered from rain, and the overhanging roof keeps rain out of the entrance. Construction is solid, with screws where needed and a piano hinge on either side. The viewing panel is an added bonus: no visitor to our house passed up a chance at a quick look at the baby birds, which started out as balls of brownish fuzz and eventually developed into lanky adolescents with blue feathers. A bonus: tree swallows like it too. That's why I'm buying a second one. The only imperfection is the lack of a complete bird ladder, though the rough sawn interior should be adequate for bluebirds. For swallows, which are extremely poor climbers, I built in a bird ladder of hardware cloth -- hardly a major project, and even simpler solutions could be improvised.

Best 1 32 oz. Hummingbird Feeder (Bulk) Review

My husband bought me 2 of these feeders for my birthday. They worked ok. the Hummingbirds used them, but not as much as my others. Mine faded the first season and the words on the outside washed of first thing, which could be a good thing.I was looking through a hummingbird web site and found that these feeders are death traps for the little guys and they had a picture of one of its victims. They said if you modify them, they are useable. To modify, First, from the bottom side of the feeder lid, re-drill each port hole outward at a 45 degree angle. Next, cut or grind the nipple from the underside. If you don't have a grinder, simply used a razor blade to cut down through the nipple at a 45 degree angle. To me it's not worth the risk to my little friends and I shouldn't have to mess around with modifying something before I use it.

Perky Thistle Sack Review

Esschert Design Birdbath & Feeder-Antique Brown Review

I was really disappointed when I got through all the packing paper and discovered the size of this "birdbath."Ashtray is more like it.It's maybe 12 inches long and about 8 inches wide -- I didn't measure it; that's an estimate.But the point is, it looks like a full-size birdbath in the picture, and it's nowhere near that.I ordered it as a replacement bowl for the birdbath I have, and this thing wouldn't even cover the hole.
It's nice for an ashtray.The thing is, there's a small hole on one side of the "trough" that's not supposed to be there.Maybe that was just a defect on the one I got.There's two holes on the edges where you screw in the birdies, but then an extra hole where the water's supposed to go!duh!I'm sending it back!

Product is fine, pricing is misleading.

I purchased this in June 2009 when it said it was 87% off list price and is now $2.54 per case.I am happy to see that the description says a "case" is one cake.It said it was 12 cakes when I purchased it. At the time they graciously refunded my shipping but I still paid for quite pricey suet when Home Depot sells it for about $1.29 per cake.

In any case, this produce would NEVER sell for $19.00 per "cake" hence an 87% discount is completely misleading and I hope no other buys make the mistake I did.

Wow, I have had this feeder for over 5 years...I have even had a squirrel attack it and I pulled it out from the bushes, cleaned it up and put it right back on my window. We have double windows in our Kitchen and I am getting another one because we get more and more hummingbirds each year. I have deep eaves so no direct sun or rain ever gets onto the feeder, maybe that is a factor that has kept mine from leaking.We love to walk right up to the window and the hummers are only the width of the glass pane from your face.

Opus Garden Song 16 Ounce Oriole Feeder Review

C. & S. Bird Seed Wreath Review

Bought this as a gift for my father-in-law. We had gotten him a number of what we thought were great items but this was the one thing that got an "oooh" from him. He's 80, a retired physician, and not he easiest person in the world to please.

This wreath was VERY heavy so it should last a long time. It came in a decent looking box with clear shrink-wrap over the front. The listing here made it a little hard to tell what the quality was going to be but it turned out to be well worth the money.

Hookery 96" Feeder Pole with Mounting Plate Review

I found this pole at my local garden center and found it to be my best birdhouse pole. The metal is heavy gauge and the sections go together easily and fit snugly. I pounded the pointed end into the ground by placing a small piece of wood on top of the section (so I didn't damage the metal) and pounded against that with a sledge hammer. It went right in and it was easy to add the other sections. I have moved it to a different location three times and it's none the worst for wear. I must have better than eight feet still above ground, so it's well above ground.The birdhouse, or feeder, mounted on a flat plate with provided screws. It will be holding the huge red belly woodpecker birdhouse I have mounted on it for a long time. I'm so glad I found it locally after the other reviewer's woes. I highly recommend it.

Ez Fill Bottom Suet Feeder Review

First of all this is a suet feeder, not a window seed feeder as stated here. I bought this somewhere else but the birds wanted no part of it. Tried sticking branches in it but no luck. The mesh openings are too small. When filled I believe there is too much weight pressing on the screen keeping the birds from grabbing on. I ended up taking the roof part off & pressing it onto a standard wire suet basket which has worked out perfectly. Now the suet stays dry & it keeps out the big birds allowing the little guys to eat in peace. This was an expensive way to get a covered feeder.

it is mildly attractive, yet all plastic giving it a cheap feel..and even at 8bucks no real bargain. the paperwork mentioned a s-hook included so as to hang it...none there. i hate getting stuff with missing parts!

this thing is huge! better have a lot of h-birds to suck up the juice, otherwise it will set there and turn bad. they even advise washing often...all the more so if that juice sits there for more than a few days in hot weather....i prefer our smaller feeder. we get 4 birds and the small one needs refilled every week. this thing would last a month, but then be filthy and raunchy inside.

ADDENDUM....THIS THING LEAKS AT EACH AND EVERY OUTLET...A TOTAL WASTE!!! VERY DISAPPOINTED

i might ad, that the missing s-hook would be needed based on the weight. using some wire would be next best.

i figure a 3 star as it is just sort of average....the pic looks better than fact. had i seen it, well iffy then of we'd have bought...certainly not at the 11buck price.

Opus Hummingbird Feeder Glass 10oz 6 x 4 x 4 inches Review

I bought this when the woodpeckers decided this year to dominate my other hummingbird feeders. The hummers took to it right away, and didn't have any trouble figuring out how to use it. The picture is a little misleading- the only part that is red is the bottom part. The top, where you fill the nectar is actually clear. It is easy to clean. The only concern I have is the seemingly cheap make of the red bottom part. I hope it doesn't crack after a few uses.

I did a lot of reading before purchasing this bird house. This is exactly what you want when looking for a bluebird house. It has 2 side doors that open, 1 for cleaning, and 1 with plexiglass in front of it (so nesting material won't fall out when opened) for viewing, and each is labeled, so you can't make a mistake. There is a raised screen floor to reduce blow-fly infestations and some of the same screening is tacked onto the front wall to help the nestlings climb out. The 1 1/2" opening is perfect for Eastern and Western bluebirds (not mountain bluebirds, which are a little larger). There are proper ventilation gaps, the roof is slanted, there are no sharp projectiles inside, and the floor is recessed and completely covered by the sides and front of the box. The only reason I gave this 4 instead of 5 stars, is because the predator guard (the little square around the entrance hole) has to be removed to add a predator protector, and the predator protector doesn't quite fit perfectly, so there is a step down from the entrance. This could be a design fault from the predator protector, as most bluebird houses have approx. the same dimensions. I also thought they should mention what kind of mounting system there is. There are mounting screws for attaching it to a wall or tree. Unfortunately, this is not the ideal way to mount the house.The bluebird house should be mounted to a pole in a wide open space (preferably 100 feet from shrubs or trees), to avoid destructive competition from house wrens, facing away from prevailing winds. You will need to buy a sturdy pole and also a squirrel/raccoon baffle for the pole.The baffle should be a 24-inch stovepipe or 30-inch conical style. DO NOT make the mistake I made, by trying to make your own, as directed by the author of "Enjoying Bluebirds More." She claims it only costs about $8 to make one. By the time I was done, I had spent $125 and 2 days working on it with my husband, although I did have supplies for 2 baffles. The torpedo style squirrel baffle available at Amazon.com has excellent reviews. Note, that the torpedo style baffle will only fit on a straight pole, not a shepherd's hook. If you mount it on a post, which is also a good option, there is a raccoon baffle available at Drs. Foster and Smith (I don't know how well it works - it looks a little too narrow to be effective- the testimonials on the site are for the pole squirrel baffle.)

I called Droll Yankee customer service, was told that the "pin size" on the power stick had been changed and that I needed a new charger. They said that when they sell the power stick, they sell the new charger along with it.
