Vari-Crafts Recycled Plastic Suet Feeder, 2 Cake Review

I bought two of these to add to the bird feeding station in my yard.They are well constructed and very attractive and I like that they are made in the USA from recycled materials.Unfortunately, they don't seem to be practical or useful for their intended purpose.Bigger birds (like woodpeckers & grackles) definitely can't get a perch on them and even the little chickadees & nuthatches seem to be struggling to feed from them.I will probably go back to feeding suet from the cheap little green cages you can purchase in any department store and these Vari-Craft feeders will be a just an expensive decoration.

ETA, After several days, the birds seem to have adapted.I haven't seen the large woodpecker come back to my yard to use this, but the smaller woodpeckers and the chickadees are able to get to the suet after all.That is, when there is any suet left after the grackles have pigged out.I may look at one of the upside down feeders next to try to discourage some of the grackles.
