I do research with plants and wanted to take some timelapse photos of my research plants as they are growing.I also wanted to find a relatively inexpensive way of doing this.I went to a camera store and they said that it would be a minimum of $1000 to do what I wanted.A friend of mine told me about BirdCam, and it was perfect for what I needed.Since I have finished my timelapse work with my plants, I have tried my hand at being a bird watcher.It's easy to use and pretty fun.I strongly recommend the BirdCam.

Seed Saucer Green Review

The saucer with the removable grid in place does an excellent job keeping seeds and husks from spilling onto the ground. The product would rate five stars if it weren't for one dangerous design flaw: the holes in the removable grid are just large enough for a sparrow-sized bird to work its head through to reach seed that has collected in the bowl below, but not large enough for the bird to pull its head back through. The grid is made of a very stiff, hard plastic which, perhaps were less rigid, would allow birds to work their heads free on their own should they become stuck. After freeing several sparrows and goldfinches whose heads had become stuck in a grid hole, I finally removed the grid and am using the saucer without it. There is some seed spillage without the grid, but nowhere near the amount that was spilling before I purchased the saucer. I can recommend this product only if it is used without the grid, and without the grid in place you will experience more seed spillage than the product was designed to prevent.

Artline 12 Ounce Strawberry Window Feeder Review

The Artline 12 ounce "strawberry" hummingbird feeder is JUST RIGHT.
-it has perches, so you can watch your hummers feeding;
-it is not too big.In this part of the country (southeastern PA) we only get one kind of hummer (ruby-throat) and even if you are lucky enough to have several hummers in your area, they will NEVER empty the feeder.
-it is VERY IMPORTANT to keep your feeder clean and this feeder is the easiest to clean; just unscrew the red top part from the green bottom part, squeeze the green bottom part and it snaps apart; rinse with hot water, vinegar and swish with a bottle brush; rinse well and there you go!
-I have 3 feeders in my yard and I clean them every day in hot weather.(You can clean them every other day if you have them in a shady spot, but mine are mainly in the sun). EASY CLEANING is essential; hummingbird feeding requires a committment because dirty feeders and sour nectar will sicken the birds.
-Over the past six years, I have purchased at least 15 of these feeders. I gave them to friends who wanted to start feeding hummers, I placed and maintain 2 feeders at an assisted living residence where I visit and I have replaced my own 3 feeders with new ones (this is a great product, but, of course, they don't last forever).
-It should be noted I do NOT use the suction cup window feeding method. I use the string hanger they give you and hang it from a hook away from the window.So, I can't comment on the success of the suction cup.
-I should have given this item a 5-star review (not just 4 stars) but couldn't figure out how to fix it.
This feeder is the one you want !! The hummers love the bright red color and the perches (they would much rather sit and drink than hover and drink and you get to really see them well while they sit there)

Schrodt Designs TH-16TF Tranquil Forest Teahouse Birdfeeder Review

This bird feeder is certainly beautiful and, at first, seems very well designed. However, squirrels have bitten away the cedar around the openings to get at the seed. The holes at the bottom are now too big to contain any seed and the feeder is now essentially a funnel. While I think I can repair this damage, the design should be reworked to include metal plates around the openings and perches. Or, the overall esthetics of the design could be preserved by lining the sides with the same kind of etched glass which comprises the body of the feeder. I would rate this feeder higher if it had come with some documentation warning me about the potential for squirrel damage. I don't know what I would have done though -- if I wanted to look at something as ugly as one of those "satellite dishes" I would have bought a plastic bird feeder. In sort, this is a beautiful bird feeder but you'll need to guard it against bushy-tailed vandals.

Nina Ottosson's Best Quality Dog Brick Puzzle Toy, Wood (not plastic) Review

Fantastic dog toy, you can make it hard or easy, don't slide the covers closed all the way at first, and after your dog gets it there it a small bowl shaped piece you put upside down between the sliders so the dog has to lift it (another spot for a treat), then slide the covers to get the rest of the treats.
I found that lifting the bowl and sliding the first slider was a good challenge for my terrier, but the cover on one side has to be slid the opposite direction as the slider on the other side, and that took her quite a bit longer to understand. Many many hours of enjoyment, and keeping her thinking and challenged keeps her out of trouble.

This feeder has a number of design issues that make it difficult to use.And, over time, the birds have stopped using this feeder.

In the beginning, the birds really liked this feeder,and they were all over it. Perching birds, clinging birds all seem satisfied. But something has happened over time, and it appears that the seed-delivery is no longer working well.I don't know whether it's because the seed is exposed to the rain and the quality deteriorates, or if the weight of the seed has caused the links to close up making the seed difficult to extract, but the birds have stopped using this feeder.

In addition, filling the feeder is a real challenge.

1. It does not stand on its own. If you put it on the floor to fill, it collapses, since the chain links are loose and there's no structure to hold the feeder in full open position. This is especially problematic if there's some seed remaining in the feeder. To fill it, you have to hold the handle in one hand while holding the cover open with the same hand (a bit tricky) and then fill with the other. You can't put the feeder down on the floor or it collapses sprinkling seed all over the place. To combat this, I rigged up an S-hook and hung the feeder from it.That way, I could hold the cover open with one hand, and fill with the other.

2. When you're filling it, the seeds pour out of the chain links. Much seed is wasted on the floor. You have to fill it with the feeder sitting in the seed bag so the seeds fall back into the bag.

In all, I would not recommend this chain-link style feeder.

Recycled Tube Feeder - Green Review

Usually when you put out a new feeder it takes the birds a few weeks to get used to it.However, the birds that came to my feeder loved this feeder from the start.As a matter of fact, they prefer this feeder to all the other ones I have.I am always having to refill it!I like this feeder because it is made from recycled materials, and I am a firm believer in recycling.I also like the fact that it holds lots of seeds, which means less trips outside!My only "issue" is that the wire that is used to hang the feeder is bent, making it hard to slide the metal clamp up and down.This makes it difficult to open the roof to fill the feeder.Perhaps I could try to straighten it, but I'm afraid I would make it worse.Despite this, I would highly recommend this feeder.

Droll Yankees, Inc The Jagunda Feeder with Auger Review

I've had this feeder for over a year and a half, and even though it is pricey (for a birdfeeder), it was well worth it. I have nothing against squirrels, but they have no place in my feeder. I've bought many other feeders that claim to be squirrel-proof, and this is the only one that has delivered on its promise. In almost 2 years, a squirrel has never been able to get into it. The design just makes it physically impossible for them to do so. (Plus, I have mine placed in the center of my yard, away from any trees. I believe a nearby branch would be the only way they could get onto the platform.) They will climb the pole to get a good look at the feeder, but have always just turned around and went back down to the ground. They just can't beat it. I highly recommend it.

Vari-crafts Recycled Suet Feeder Green - RVCS-2 Review

I bought two of these to add to the bird feeding station in my yard.They are well constructed and very attractive and I like that they are made in the USA from recycled materials.Unfortunately, they don't seem to be practical or useful for their intended purpose.Bigger birds (like woodpeckers) definitely can't get a perch on them and even the little chickadees & nuthatches seem to be struggling to feed from them.I will probably go back to feeding suet from the cheap little green cages you can purchase in any department store and these Vari-Craft feeders will be a just an expensive decoration.

Edited 5/31/10:After having the feeders in the yard for a couple of months, I have to revise my initial opinion.The birds have adapted and can use them with no problem - even the bigger birds.Unfortunately, very noisy and obnoxious grackles & starlings have now taken over the feeders and have chased away the charming Chickadees and Nuthatches that I enjoy watching. Habita Birdhouse Branches Terra Cotta Review

This is a great ceramic birdhouse.The picture is a great representation of its color.It is easy to slide the top up to clean and its ceramic intereior and exterior will hold up for years with reasonable care.Since it is ceramic it can break if dropped or mistreated but I love it so much I am going to get several more for my second home.Also the price for the terra cotta colored unit is 1/4 that of the same birdhouses in white, blue or green.What a great deal!

Arundale Mandarin Sky Café - Green Review

I bought one of these feeders for myself about 5 years ago, and it is the best squirrel-proof feeder that I have found. Exceptionally talented squirrels can jump horizontally into the narrow space between the roof and tray, but only if it is quite close to a tree or wall. Most squirrels crash a few times and then make due cleaning up what the birds dump on the ground. They can't access it by coming down the chain from above. The feeder also holds so much seed (about 6-7 lbs.) that you don't need to refill it often. I love this feeder and recently purchased a second one as a gift. You'll make up the cost in saved seed within a few months.

Shimmer Glass Birdfeeder, AQUA Review

I sensed there might be a problem with this product as soon as I saw it. I was afraid that squirrels might be able to gnaw through its thin, flexible hanger too easily. But I dismissed my fears, thinking that perhaps there was a metal core to the hanger.

However my fears were realized less than an hour after I hung this birdfeeder on a tree branch. I looked out and saw the feeder on the ground. Sure enough, a squirrel had gnawed through the cord and was happily munching on the seed scattered on the ground. Luckily, the glass feeder wasn't broken, so I bent the original hanger out of the way and jury-rigged a stout coat hanger to serve the purpose.

Then the glass of the feeder doesn't really sparkle much. Mostly, the feeder looks like an opaque box, and you can't tell at a glance when its supply of birdseed has been depleted. You have to lift the roof off the container to see where things stand.

On the plus side, the sparrows and cardinals in my area seem to like the feeder well enough. It's ledge is large enough to give them a perch while feeding, but not large enough to allow pigeons and other voracious birds to get a foothold and finish off all the seed. Then if you rig the coat hanger properly, you can also prevent squirrels from devouring the seed.

Another positive - the feeder's roof has enough of an overhang to keep the seed in the tray dry during rainstorms.

In short, this is OK, but it seems as if there are better options out there.

We purchased three of these Hibiscus 48oz hummingbird feeders in June from a local garden center. All three of them leaked badly once placed outside. If we set them over a dish in the kitchen, no leak, but as soon as they were hung outside, the nectar started oozing out of the flower ports as if the air in the top of the feeder was expanding. Hummzinger Fancy Hummingbird Feeder Review

wow I love this design, easy to clean. It has the recipe for homemade hummingbird food in the instructions. The birds loved it, however, at first they couldn't find the hole, so I hot glued one layer of a little silk flower (minus the center plastic stem of course) over each hole, hallelujah!they found it! After a couple of weeks one can take off the silk flowers, but I really liked the look with the flowers. I thought the feeder was a bit expensive, but in the long run, worth it to me. Better made than the dime store variety and a whiz to clean, important for my busy life & their health. The top part of the feeder is an inverted disk that actually slips over the hook & loosely sits on top of the saucer so no worrying about getting threads lined up, etc. It gets hot here in Tex & I notice there seems to be a little less evaporation with this one than the other bottle type. I also like the ant moat. Be careful to keep level as you hang it however to minimize spilling the nectar on your porch.

PH STAND QUAD POD BLACK Review

This simple stand is very easy to throw together in less then 10 minutes and works wonderful for small birds / cages.I have it in the corner of the room and love it. I would recommend that you think about getting a bird cage with a outward slanted bottom though to catch all the seed and bird mess stuff though as you have to move the whole unit out to vacuum under it.

I was considering building my own bat house but after pricing materials and factoring in time... I decided to buy two of them.While I still haven't ruled out building a large size one.I wanted to see if this would draw some bats.

Oh for those that can't figure out why I am trying to draw bats around out house, it is to deal with bugs and mosquitoes. I grew up on a lake and I don't remember being plagued like I am were we live now,one big difference we had a lot of bats at the lake.

Perky Pet Clear Plastic Hummingbird Feeder with 16 Ounce Nectar Review

I wanted to wait a while before giving a review.This Hummingbird feeder works well and several males fight over whose gets to use it (females of course having free reign).It doesn't refill as well as I would like - but none of them do.It also drips on its own when the ambient temperature rises, but that means the holes aren't clogged up like I've seen with other feeders.
I wish it had perches -and apparently, so do some of the birds.I made some and glued them on.The birds seem to appreciate this, as I put on two (there are four feeding areas) and those are the ones the females use. I guess not having to expend energy while replenishing it works better. The males prefer the openings without the perches so they can be ready to chase off other males I presume.
I also have chickadees and orioles who visit on occasion, and seem to appreciate the perches.

Droll Yankees THMINI 8-Inch Polished Pewter Mini Thistle Feeder Review

We ordered the Droll Yankees THMINI 8-Inch Polished Pewter Mini Thistle Feeder from Amazon who placed the order with Picnic World Plus. They sent us the wrong feeder, an A-6 Mini Tubular 8" Feeder with a bent hanger. We called Picnic World Plus to get the right feeder shipped and a voucher to ship the wrong one back. Picnic World sent another wrong A-6 Mini Tubular 8" Feeder. We called again and were told the one we wanted was out of stock. We should've been told that from the beginning and an alternative should not have been made for us.

The thistle feeder was made specifically for the tiny thistle seeds which would fall out of a regular feeder like the A-6 Mini. Had the folks at Picnic World Plus known anything about the products or bothered to actually to look at the products they sell, they would've noticed the big difference between the two feeders.

As of yet, we have not received a return voucher for the first A-6 Mini sent to us, as promised. We'll be waiting for the second one which was promised to send both feeders back and get a refund!

Dr JB Feet s Hummingbird Feeder With Yellow Petals Review

I've been feeding hummers for nearly 10 years.I feed about 40 Rufous and Annas at any one time and use about a half gallon of nectar a day (if I had more feeders, I'm sure I'd use more nectar as the feeders are nearly 100% used all day long).

Up till now, my favorite feeder remains the Perky Pet 32 oz feeder, even though it is needlessly difficult to clean (no way to disassemble the base and clean the nooks and crannies - even a flexible bottle brush isn't sufficient - have to resort to using uncooked rice to try and clean them properly).

Anyhoo, this feeder looked like somebody was (finally) using their noodle and I bought a few.When I got them, I found some flaws.First off, the capacity is too small for my preference and needs - only 16 oz.I bought 4 of them to compensate, but am returning them.The convenience in cleaning doesn't offset the design flaws imo.

Problems that I see: 1) The angle of the feeding holes are too flat for even the smallest hummers to drink from without kinking their necks (a problem way too many feeders have in common- I wonder if the people designing the feeders even bother to watch hummers in action).

2) The perch for the hummers is too close to the body for even the smaller hummers to feed without being crammed tight.

3)Only 4 feeding stations - I prefer 6 per feeder to drain the feeders faster and prevent the nectar from spoiling.

Dr JB gets an attaboy for designing an easy to clean feeder, but it should have been so much better.However, considering the atrociously bad selection of feeders (despite the myriad numbers being sold), this feeder is a decent choice.

I will keep looking for the perfect feeder, but I despair that I will ever find one...

I ordered this hummingbird feeder because I liked the design, but I didn't think about the fact that the bottle was plastic, not glass.That helps with the overall weight, but you can't pour boiling sugar water into it --- you have to cool it first.I like to pour the liquid in while still boiling so that it sterilizes the bottle.Other than that it seems like a decent feeder.
